QR Code Not Scanning

Common Issues

Screen Too Bright or Too Dark

Adjust the iPad's screen brightness for the venue lighting
Avoid direct sunlight on the screen — it causes glare

QR Code Too Small

Make sure the QR code is displayed large enough to scan from a comfortable distance
Guests shouldn't have to press their phone against the screen

Guest's Phone Issues

Older phones may not have built-in QR scanning — suggest they download a QR reader app
The phone camera needs to be focused on the code — make sure it's steady

No Internet on Guest's Phone

The QR code opens a web link — the guest needs internet on their phone
If the venue has poor cell service, suggest they connect to the venue Wi-Fi first

Quick Fixes

Increase screen brightness — Brighter screen = easier scan
Clean the screen — Fingerprints and smudges can interfere with scanning
Ensure stable internet — Both the iPad (for uploading) and guest's phone (for viewing) need connectivity
Test it yourself — Scan the QR code with your own phone to verify it works

Prevention

Test at the venue — Lighting conditions affect scannability
Add a small sign — "Point your camera at the QR code" helps guests who aren't familiar with QR scanning

Understanding Templates and Layouts

Templates are the blueprint for your photo booth output. They control how captured photos are arranged, what text and graphics surround them, and how the final result looks — both on screen and in print.

What Is a Template?

A template defines:

Layout — How many photos, their size, and where they're positioned
Background — A solid color or custom image behind the photos
Text — Event titles, dates, contact info, or any custom text
Overlays — Textures, borders, logos, and decorative elements
Print size — The physical dimensions of the printed output (2x6, 4x6, etc.)

Think of it as a frame for your photos. The photos fill the slots, and the template makes everything look polished and professional.

How Templates Work

You select a template for your event
Guests take photos — the number of photos matches the template's slots
Photos are placed into the template automatically
The result is displayed on the share screen and used for printing

Template Sizes

ALIVE supports several standard print sizes:

2x6 inches — Classic photo strip (the booth standard)
4x6 inches — Photo card (portrait)
6x4 inches — Photo card (landscape)

Your template size determines the print output size. Make sure your template matches the paper loaded in your printer.

My Effects & Custom Effect Creation

The dashboard lets you view all your custom AI effects and create brand-new ones — giving you full creative control over what your booth can do.

Viewing Your Effects

Go to Dashboard → My Effects
Browse your custom effects (12 per page)
See each effect's status: Succeeded, Pending, or Failed
Click any effect to preview it — a preview modal shows the effect's image or video, name, and description so you can see exactly what it looks like before assigning it to an event

This is where all your custom-created effects live — separate from the built-in ALIVE effects library.

Previewing Effects

You can preview any effect — both custom and built-in — before using it at an event:

Click on an effect card in your effects list or the effects library
A preview modal opens showing:

The effect's image or video preview (videos autoplay in a loop)
The effect name and description

Close the preview and continue browsing

This works in both the My Effects page and when selecting effects in your event's Remote Setup tab. No more guessing what an effect looks like — preview it first, then assign it.

Creating a Custom Effect

Want an effect that doesn't exist in the library? Create your own.

Click Create New Effect
Choose your settings:

App Won't Start or Crashes

ALIVE acting up? Here are the most common fixes.

Quick Fixes

1. Force Close and Reopen

Swipe up from the bottom of the screen (or double-tap the Home button)
Find ALIVE in the app switcher
Swipe it up to close
Open ALIVE again

2. Restart Your iPad

Hold the power button (and volume button on newer iPads)
Slide to power off
Wait 10 seconds
Turn it back on

3. Check for Updates

Open the App Store
Tap your profile icon
Check if ALIVE has an update available
Install the update

4. Check Storage

If your iPad is running low on storage, apps can crash.

Go to iPad Settings → General → iPad Storage
Check available space
Free up space by removing unused apps or old photos

Still Crashing?

Delete and reinstall the app (your data is saved in the cloud — sign back in after reinstalling)
Check iOS version — ALIVE requires iOS 14.5 or later. Update your iPad if needed.
