ALIVE Magic Print — Supported Platforms

ALIVE Magic Print runs on all three major desktop operating systems, so you can use whatever computer or laptop fits your booth setup best.

Supported Operating Systems

Windows

The most common choice for photo booth operators. The majority of dye-sublimation printers have first-class Windows driver support, making this the path of least resistance.

  • Minimum: Windows 10
  • Recommended: Windows 10 or Windows 11
  • Architecture: x64 (64-bit)
  • Connection: USB for printer, Wi-Fi or Ethernet for network

macOS

Fully supported on both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs. If you're running your booth from a MacBook or Mac Mini, ALIVE Magic Print works natively — no Rosetta translation layer needed for Apple Silicon.

  • Minimum: macOS 11 (Big Sur)
  • Recommended: macOS 13 (Ventura) or later
  • Architecture: Intel (x64) and Apple Silicon (ARM64)
  • Connection: USB for printer, Wi-Fi or Ethernet for network

Linux

Supported for operators who prefer Linux. Works on most modern distributions.

  • Minimum: A distribution with glibc 2.31 or later (Ubuntu 20.04+, Debian 11+, Fedora 33+)
  • Architecture: x64 (64-bit)
  • Connection: USB for printer, Wi-Fi or Ethernet for network

Linux users may need to configure printer drivers manually and handle firewall rules (see Firewall Configuration). CUPS is the standard printing system on Linux.

Installation Differences by Platform

Platform

Installer Format

Notes

Windows

.exe installer

May prompt for admin elevation during setup

macOS

.dmg disk image

Drag to Applications folder. May need to allow in Security & Privacy on first launch.

Linux

.AppImage or .deb

AppImage runs directly. .deb installs via package manager.

General System Requirements

Regardless of platform, you'll need:

  • USB port — For connecting your photo printer
  • Network connection — Wi-Fi or Ethernet on the same network as your iPad
  • 2 GB RAM minimum (4 GB recommended)
  • 200 MB disk space for the application
  • Additional disk space for the print queue (images are cached locally)

Choosing a Platform

For most booth operators, Windows is the easiest choice. Printer driver support is broadest, and the automatic firewall configuration handles network setup for you.

macOS is a great option if you're already in the Apple ecosystem — especially with Apple Silicon Macs, which run cool and quiet inside a booth enclosure.

Linux is there for operators who know their way around the terminal and want maximum control over their setup.

No matter which platform you choose, always do a full test print run before your first event. Printer drivers, firewall settings, and network behavior can vary across operating systems.
