ALIVE Magic Print Auto-Updates

Keeping ALIVE Magic Print up to date ensures compatibility with the latest version of the ALIVE iPad app, and gives you access to bug fixes, performance improvements, and new features. The good news: updates are mostly hands-off.

How Updates Work

Every time ALIVE Magic Print starts, it checks for available updates in the background. If your version is current, nothing happens — the app launches normally and you're on your way.

If a newer version is available, the app notifies you and handles the update process.

Required Updates

Some updates are required. If your installed version falls below the minimum version needed to work with the current ALIVE iPad app, an unclosable modal appears on launch. You won't be able to use ALIVE Magic Print until you update.

This isn't arbitrary — required updates happen when there are breaking changes to the communication protocol between the iPad app and the print server. Running mismatched versions could cause print failures, connection issues, or data errors.

When you see the mandatory update modal, you must update before the app will function. Don't try to work around it — the versions need to match for reliable printing.

The Update Process

  1. Close ALIVE Magic Print when prompted
  2. The app downloads the update automatically in the background
  3. Restart the app to launch the new version

That's it. No manual downloads, no digging through websites. The update is pulled and applied when you restart.

Manual Download

If the automatic update fails (network issues, permissions problems), you can always grab the latest version directly:

Download the installer for your platform, run it, and it will replace the existing installation with the latest version.

Why Updates Matter

  • iPad app compatibility — The ALIVE iPad app and ALIVE Magic Print communicate using a specific protocol. Updates keep both sides in sync.
  • Bug fixes — Printing edge cases, network discovery issues, and queue management improvements are shipped regularly.
  • New features — Template improvements, performance optimizations, and new printing capabilities arrive through updates.
  • Security patches — Network-facing applications need to stay current to remain secure.

Tips

  • Update before events, not during — Check for updates at your studio, not at the venue. Run the app, let it update if needed, and verify everything works.
  • Keep an internet connection during startup — The update check requires network access. If you're at a venue with no internet, the check will be skipped.
  • Don't ignore the mandatory update modal — It's there for a reason. Mismatched versions between the iPad and your computer will cause problems.

Make it part of your pre-event checklist: launch ALIVE Magic Print at your studio a day before the event, let it update if needed, and run a test print. No surprises on event day.
