# Required App Permissions

ALIVE needs a few permissions to work properly. Here's what they are, why we need them, and how to manage them.

---

## Permissions Overview

| Permission | Why It's Needed | Required? |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Camera** | To capture photos and videos | Yes |
| **Microphone** | To record audio in ALIVE Effect videos | Yes (for ALIVE Effect) |
| **Photo Library** | To save captured media and access uploaded images | Yes |
| **Local Network** | To discover and connect to printers on your Wi-Fi | Yes (for printing) |

---

## Granting Permissions

When you first open ALIVE, you'll be prompted to grant each permission. Tap **Allow** for each one.

If you accidentally denied a permission:

1. Open your iPad's **Settings** app
2. Scroll down and find **ALIVE Photobooth**
3. Toggle each permission on

## What Happens Without Permissions?

| Missing Permission | Impact |
| --- | --- |
| Camera denied | Cannot capture photos or videos — the booth won't work |
| Microphone denied | ALIVE Effect videos will have no audio |
| Photo Library denied | Cannot save photos locally or access uploaded media |
| Local Network denied | Cannot discover or connect to printers |

---

## Camera & AI Access Modal

If ALIVE detects that **camera permission** or another critical permission is missing when you're about to start an event, it surfaces a dedicated **Camera & AI Access** modal. The modal tells you exactly which permissions are blocking the booth and gives you a one-tap shortcut to the iPad's Settings screen for ALIVE.

You'll see this modal when:

* Camera permission was denied or was never granted
* Photo library access is missing and AI effects need to write a result back
* AI features are blocked from accessing captured media

The modal is there to stop you from going live with a broken booth — if you see it, grant the requested permissions before continuing. Once everything is allowed, you can dismiss the modal and proceed.

## Local Network (iOS 14.5+)

This is the one that catches most people. iOS requires apps to explicitly request permission to find devices on your local network. Without it, ALIVE can't discover printers.

If printing isn't working, **this is the first thing to check.**

1. Go to iPad **Settings** → **Privacy & Security** → **Local Network**
2. Make sure ALIVE Photobooth is **enabled**

---

## Tips

* **Grant all permissions on first launch** — It saves troubleshooting later
* **Check permissions if something isn't working** — 90% of "camera not working" or "printer not found" issues are permission problems
* **Don't revoke permissions mid-event** — Everything might stop working

| When setting up a new iPad for your booth, run through the permission grants first. Open the app, allow everything, then proceed to configuration.
